Kuala Lumpur, 22 April 2014 – BMW Group Malaysia today unveiled a new variant of the BMW 4 Series Coupé – the all-new BMW 420i Coupé. Embodying the BMW 4 Series Coupé’s power, sportiness and presence, the all-new BMW 420i Coupé is set to propel the premium automaker’s sports Coupé segment to even greater heights.
“The creation of the premium sports Coupé has been a long specialist competency that we at BMW have had for decades. Our tradition of building luxurious yet performance-based four-seat, two-door coupes reaches all the way back to the 1930s and since then, our success with coupes has continued to grow with the introduction of amazing BMW vehicles such as the BMW 503 from our Baroque Angel era and the iconic BMW 3.0 CS Coupé. It is clear that in the realm of building coupés, BMW was in the business of building legends and today, BMW will introduce yet another iconic coupé, the all-new BMW 420i Coupé to allow a wider range of coupés for our customers to enjoy the true meaning of a two-door premium car,” said Dr. Gerhard Pils, Chief Executive Officer of BMW Group Malaysia.
Dr. Pils further noted that the all-new BMW 420i Coupé would also allow BMW Group Malaysia to further reinforce its position as the country’s number one selling premium automotive brand, as the all-new coupe set a higher benchmark for the premium sports Coupe segment.
“In the first quarter of 2014, we at BMW Group Malaysia have already delivered a total of 1,972 vehicles in the country comprising of 1,735 BMW, 132 MINI and 108 BMW Motorrad. This marks an 18% increase as compared to the same period in 2013 where we delivered 1,665 vehicles. The all-new BMW 420i Coupé possess all the stylistic features which will carry the same promise of a powerful presence on the road, such as that from the BMW 428i Coupé and BMW 435i Coupé. We are confident that the all-new BMW 420i Coupé will continue to deliver stand-out dynamic ability and driving pleasure in abundance for our customers in Malaysia,” said Dr. Pils.
Design: A distinctive and muscular road presence.
The distinctive features of the all-new BMW 420i Coupé stands out with superior aesthetics, power, sporting appeal and presence. With a silhouette which appears even lower and more elongated than the previous generation BMW 3 Series Coupé, the all-new BMW 420i Coupé is visibly sportier with visual cues of the BMW 4 Series – typical BMW short overhangs, long wheelbase, and a cabin that is offset towards the rear, in addition to its low, flowing and elegant roofline as well as conspicuously low windows inside frameless doors.
Another identifying feature of the all-new BMW 420i Coupé which underlines its dynamic convictions are the Air Breathers, positioned rearwards of the front wheel arches. These are combined with Air Curtains to reduce drag considerably around the wheel arches, and provide further visual cues to the aerodynamic refinement of the coupé.
The all-new BMW 420i Coupé also arrives with an optional Sport Line package as an upgrade, featuring 18” Double-spoke light alloy wheels instead of the standard 17” Star-spoke light alloy wheels, as well as black high-gloss mirror caps and exterior trims.
BMW EfficientDynamics: Superior dynamism and excellent fuel efficiency.
At the heart of the all-new BMW 420i Coupé is the multi-award winning BMW TwinPower Turbo technology which teams up with an eight-speed automatic transmission, an essential constituent of BMW EfficientDynamics measures.
Housing a two litre four-cylinder in-line petrol engine, the all-new BMW 420i Coupé delivers a maximum output of 135kW / 184hp with torque peaking at 270Nm; enabling the all-new coupé to sprint from 0 to 100km/h in 7.3 seconds at a top speed of 236km/h. On top of demonstrating spectacular acceleration, the all-new BMW 420i Coupé remains impressively economical with an average fuel economy which stands at a notable 6.0 litres per 100 kilometres and C02 emissions of just 139 grams per kilometre.
The overall character of the all-new BMW 420i Coupé can be modified to an exceptionally fuel-efficient style of driving by switching to the ECO PRO mode through Driving Experience Control which is featured as standard. The unique ECO PRO mode offers a new sailing function which will disengage the engine from the drivetrain at speeds between 50 to 160km/h when the driver takes the foot off the accelerator pedal. This allows the Coupé to further save on fuel consumption while coasting. On top of blending the all-new BMW 420i Coupé’s enviable power output with efficiency, the ECO PRO route also allows drivers to save up to an additional five per cent of fuel consumption depending on their individual driving style.
To further fulfil sporting ambitions and to experience maximum dynamics, efficiency and driving comfort, the optional Sport Line package will also offer an 8-speed sports automatic transmission with Launch Control. Shorter shift times will improve acceleration and aid sporty driving as the gentle gradation of the eight gears reduces the engine’s rev interval between shifts. This makes the transmission process barely noticeable. Meanwhile, the Launch Control function delivers enhanced driving pleasure as it blends acceleration with optimised traction for maximum dynamics from a standstill. As an upgrade for drivers who want to bring BMW’s unique motorsport capabilities to the street, the optional Sport Line package also includes M Sport suspension which offers stiffer spring, damper and stabiliser tuning for even greater sports like experience.
Interior: Elegant, sporting appeal and superior functionality.
The all-new BMW 420i Coupé presents a stylish fusion of sporting allure and exclusivity. Its interior offering incorporates Leather Dakota upholstery with an interior Satin Silver Matt trim. The car’s sporting credentials beyond the ergonomic cockpit design of the all-new coupé is further accentuated with a sports leather steering wheel.
Meanwhile, the Sport Line package features further enhancements to its sporty interior with BMW Individual Anthracite, high-gloss black and highlight trim finishers of Coral Red matt, sports seats, and sports leather steering wheel with gearshift paddles – all of which further accentuates the premium and sporty ambience within the all-new coupé.
BMW ConnectedDrive: the best of driver assistance systems and mobility services.
The all-new BMW 420i Coupé features a combination of driver assistance systems and mobility services with a sporting and elegant cockpit which is equipped with BMW ConnectedDrive to further demonstrate BMW’s commitment to driver orientation.
The all-new BMW 420i Coupé comes with a 6.5” display monitor with BMW Radio Professional as well as USB and Bluetooth features to expand functionalities for mobile phones and audio streaming. The all-new BMW 420i Coupé Sport additionally comes equipped with a HiFi loudspeaker system with nine speakers to continue delivering the ultimate sheer driving experience.
The all-new BMW 420i Coupé will be available in five exterior paint shades – Alpine White, Black Sapphire, Midnight Blue, Mineral Grey and Leather Dakota Black. Meanwhile, the shades of Melbourne Red and Leather Dakota Black with Red highlights will be available exclusively for the Sport Line package.
